Why do I only get a small flame from my GrillGun or Su-VGun, and neither the knob nor the handle seems to work?

There is a "safety-check” valve built into the handle of the GrillGun and Su-VGun that when set will block most of the flow of propane into the torch.  In the event that it falls over, is dropped to the ground, is moved quickly or erratically (as in running), or is pointed in a manner that would let liquid propane from the attached bottle or hose into the torch, it will shut it down.  You will then need to turn off the torch, disconnect the fuel source, release the pressure in the torch (by turning the knob or squeezing the handle) and then reconnect the fuel while holding the GrillGun and propane bottles, upright and vertical (so that liquid propane in the bottle cannot enter the GrillGun).

Why does my GrillGun or Su-VGun shut off and produce a small flame when I point it down into the charcoal grill?

Read the #1 most frequently asked question above, the problem is the same.  When you are using a very full bottle of propane attached to the GrillGun or Su-VGun, you need to think of it as full of a liquid (liquid propane).  Just like when holding and moving about a full glass of water, it is easy to slosh or spill the water out of the glass.  The same is true for a very full canister propane.  Until the liquid propane level in the bottle has dropped about a half an inch inside the bottle, it can easily get into the connector and up into the torch where the safety check valve will close to prevent it from blowing through to the output.  When the fuel level in the bottle has dropped a little bit, you should be able to point the gun up or down to about a 60-70 degree angle.  The lower the level the steeper the angle.

GrillGun and Su-V Gun questions

What’s the heat output of the GrillGun?

Up to 400,000 BTUs with a fully blue flame.

Should I light charcoal through the grill grates?

Yes, for heavy steel or cast metal grates. For chrome-plated grates, remove first to avoid damage.

Why not use a regular weed torch?

You can, but the GrillGun is more efficient, balanced, and uses 40% less fuel.

Why doesn’t my charcoal turn gray?

The GrillGun blows away ash, leaving red glowing coals. They’ll turn gray as they burn.

How long will a 400 g propane bottle last?

4-8 full “two-minute” burns, depending on conditions.

Can I use the GrillGun in winter?

Yes, but store propane bottles indoors to maintain pressure.

Can I connect it to my home’s natural gas?

No, the pressure is too low for proper performance.

Are there regulations on using the GrillGun?

Follow local outdoor burning rules, but it’s not regulated like a flamethrower.

Can I use it for fireplaces, chimineas, and campfires?

Yes, it’s portable and great for lighting and sanitizing grills.

Will it work with MAPP gas?

Yes, the stand can hold MAPP gas bottles too.

What safety features are included?

Handle trigger lock, check valve, and a bottle stand. Read the manual for safe use.

Should I disconnect the propane bottle when not in use?

Yes, to prevent accidental use, especially by children.

Can I refill disposable propane bottles?

Yes, but check safety risks and refill options.

How do I avoid burns when lighting the grill?

Stand back, move in slowly, and respect the fire’s heat.

Why does it blow out inside my Egg cooker or deep grill?

It needs oxygen, so pull it back slightly for airflow.

Can I light charcoal through grill grates?

Yes, if they are heavy steel or cast metal. For chrome grates, remove them first to avoid damaging the finish.

Will the spark igniter burn out?

No, it’s designed to last and stay out of the flame.

Are there user-serviceable parts?

The gas nozzle is replaceable if debris gets in it.

Is it normal for fuel to flow when the valve is off?

Yes, the handle trigger bypasses the valve for quick bursts of fire.

How do I use it to sear meat?

Place meat on the grill and blast it with fire for a quick sear.

How do I know when the sear is done?

Searing is both art and science. Science: expose the meat to flame for a few seconds to lock in juices. Art: adjust to get your preferred color. It takes practice.

How do I prevent drying out the meat?

Use a quick sear with a spray-on cooking oil like duck fat. A full-bore flame for 5 seconds per side works well.

Can I sear on granite without a stone?

No. Searing directly on stone or stainless steel can cause permanent discoloration or damage. Always use a protective surface like a baking stone, cast iron pan, or ceramic tile.

Will propane flavor the meat?

No, as long as you use a blue flame, the fuel is fully consumed, leaving only heat, water, and carbon dioxide.

Can I flame desserts in a glass dish or do I need cast iron?

You can flame desserts in glass with a low flame, like any torch. The Su-VGun on low is perfect for this.
